Sailing Progression
Point out parts of boat (Splashboard, boom, gaff, mast, halyard, sheet, rudder, tiller, centerboard, bridle, deck, block and cleat).
Demonstrate ability to rig a sailboat, unrig, and reef the sail. Also how to properly set rudder and center-board.
Demonstrate how to "come about."
Back a Sunfish
Demonstrate ability to right an overturned sailboat.
Sail a designated course (demonstrate skills).
Demonstrate the correct way to make a landing-include proper center board use.
Explain right-of-way rules
Demonstrate ability to tie basic knots (cleat, clove hitch, square knot, slip knot, overhand knot, and bowline.)
Explain terms: reach, run, beat, tack, heel, and luffing.
Sail the boat to a buoy and be able to unrig there.
Demonstrate how to perform a controlled jibe.
Serve 2 hours as crew on a large sailboat Flying Scot, Hobie Cat or other.
Point out parts of a boat (gaff, plug, sail rings, bow, stern, beam, mast ring, starboard, port).
Sail 6 hours on a Sunfish.
Perform a solo sail.
Demonstrate ability to hand and cast off from dock.
Participate in a regatta.
Demonstrate ability to rig a larger boat (main & jib sails).Â
Head a crew on a larger sailboat (main & jib sails).
Crew on an advanced sailboat.
Instruct at all lower levels and on various boats.
Head a crew on the advanced sailboat.
Demonstrate ability to use a spinnaker.
Demonstrate ability to perform specific repairs.
Take an "extended" sail (e.g., day sail, over lunch or dinner and overnight...)
